High-Pressure Die Casting: A Review of Progress from the EPSRC Future LiME Hub

This article provides an overview of high-pressure die casting (HPDC)-related research undertaken at the EPSRC Future LiME Hub between 2015–2022. The project aimed to identify cause variability in tensile ductility die-cast structures, and develop novel processing techniques address this issue. Variability was related size large pores non-metallic inclusions. It proposed that these inclusions formed during pyrolysis commercial plunger lubricants shot sleeve, derived from dilatational strains introduced semi-solid deformation. Processing parameters design were found significantly influence microstructure products, subsequent ductility. To close, recent progress on application intensive melt shearing HPDC is reviewed. Intensive induce significant grain refinement both Al Mg alloys due effective dispersion native oxide particles, use particles as heterogeneous nucleation substrates. presence also enabled heat treatment procedures avoided conventional issues such surface blistering geometrical distortion.
